What does leadership look like?
The essential activity of leadership is conversations. Each conversation is a new chance to facilitate the study of the situation, guide the direction that exploration takes, and coach others in the skills required to succeed.
“Leadership is the day to day communications about the real issues.”
If a leader’s job is to facilitate the study of the situation, then good questions are essential to good leadership.
The goal of asking good questions is to invite others to think and explore the situation alongside you.
Both patience and persistence are vital, as not all invitations are accepted.
What makes a question worthwhile is not what answers it may have but the change it creates in others.
