What is a leader’s job?
Whether you are the person in charge or merely a person who cares, you will at times find yourself needing to lead.
Leadership is about what you do, not what job title you hold.
While we may be conditioned to believe that leadership means giving orders and being the one in charge, that is hardly how it works in practice.
Rather, the best leadership happens with others rather than to them.
So how can you be a good leader, without giving orders or relying on a position of power and authority?
We suggest: A leader’s job is to facilitate the study of the situation. They guide those in their care to see the challenges ahead and grapple with what must be done.
“My solution is to depersonalize the giving of orders, to unite all concerned in a study of the situation, to discover the law of the situation and obey that… One person should not give orders to another person, but both should agree to take their orders from the situation.”
