In leadership, sometimes a consequential situation develops rapidly, leaving you wondering when and how much to share with those in your care.

We suggest the following:

DO treat people like adults.

Tell the truth about what’s happened and what it means.

Don’t lie or spin to make the situation seem more favorable than it is.

If you need, say, “I don’t know yet.”

DON’T share more than they’re ready to hear.

Don’t flood them with every little development; share updates at an appropriate tempo.

Don’t be casual about big or bad news.

Create stability by making it easy to understand what’s happened so far and how we intend to respond.

Weighing the tension between sharing and withholding requires great care.
