Suddenly, you are aware of their eyes and ears.
They are looking to you! Listening, to you!
(Uh oh. Say something! Lead!)
So, you tell them what to do. You tell them why it matters. And you tell them exactly how to do it the way you want.
No detail spared, now they can execute!
Why then do they go passive, helpless, waiting to be told exactly what to do the instant something goes wrong?
You are not alone in this challenge.
The problem is those lengthy, detailed instructions. By sharing them, you trained your people to turn off their minds, to do as they’re told.
You took away their opportunity to contribute to the design, and so smothered their natural desire to take ownership and initiative.
Don’t worry. You can fix it.
You just need to wake their minds back up, to prove that you value them thinking again.
How?
Provide a clear What and Why, then leave the How to them.
You’ll need to guide and encourage, coaching and developing their individual capabilities. You do give up some control, but you’ll also enjoy better results.
